Check your car for safety recalls.

Let Master Auto Tech check your car for safety recalls. There are a number of safety related recalls in the news. I know you would like to think; my Mercedes, BMW or even Toyota would never have a factory recall. But all these manufacture have open recalls right now. Some are safety related. Toyota has a fire hazard recall so does Mercedes. Their is an Air Bag recall where the air bag instead of protecting the passenger can actually harm the occupant with it’s explosive device. A recall happens when an auto manufacturer discovers they have made a mistake. Some times the car maker recalls their cars to avoid potential law suits, sometimes the government forces them to bring a number of their vehicles back for inspection or repair. Some times the factory recalls cars just because it is the right thing to do. At Master Auto Tech we will check your vehicle by it’s identification numbe ... read more

Car Battery Life

Car Battery Life

What about my “car battery life”? How long should my car battery be expected to live and what will happen when my car battery dies. We’ve all heard the heartbreaking click, click, click that come from our car starter when our car battery dies. It doesn’t necessarily mean the battery is destined to meet it’s recycler though. There are a number of things that can keep our car battery from starting the car. Sometime I hear a phrase which goes something like this; “My car won’t start but I know the battery is ok because the lights work.” On a scale of one to three hundred your car’s lights need about a 20 to illuminate. The starter needs 300 or more if it’s a diesel to start. There are other things like lose dirty battery connections or having left a light on overnight which will also cause your battery to be unable to do the hard work of starting the car. Sometimes the terminals can be cleaned and tightened, or simply recharging the battery will show the battery is not bad but simpl ... read more

Mercedes Benz transmission bulletin

Mercedes Benz transmission bulletin

Did you know there is a Mercedes Benz transmission bulletin regarding potential issues with Mercedes Benz transmission manufactured since 2004? Transmission failure on these cars may be due to problems in a part of the transmission called the conductor plate. The plate in question holds speed sensors that tell the brains of the electronic transmission what gear the transmission is in. These sensors fail and are part of a module called a conductor plate. When they fail the transmission will typically not shift past second gear. This is referred to as “limp home mode.” Just as the name suggests limp home mode is programmed into the transmission so that if there is a failure, even though the transmission is not in a condition for general service the customer can, “limp home,” to a repair facility and the fault can be diagnosed and repaired. Don’t let any one sell you a Mercedes Benz transmission ... read more

Brake Service Basics

Brake Service Basics

Replacing brake fluid when due is a brake service basic. Modern Brake are the most powerful system on your vehicle even if your car has a high performance engine like the one in the picture. It is one system we do not want to fail. When you push on your brake peddle ten pounds of pressure can equate to around 500 pounds of force at the actual brake. This creates friction and the brakes job is to remove or dissipate the heat which is generated. Notice the cars brake disks are glowing red. There is a lot of heat there. For the brakes to stop the car, the brake rotors must dissipate heat and the hydraulic fluid which multiplies the force of your foot on the peddle, must not boil. When it does you experience that uncomfortable feeling we call brake fade. You press harder and harder but the car just does not slow down. Thats why the Department of Transportation is very strict about brake fluid ratings. A Department of Transportation (DOT) fluid rated at 4, (DOT 4) boils at ar ... read more

Car Care Success

Car Care Success

We don’t often think of car care success when we think of our transportation. We find the kind of car of SUV we like, we buy it and we drive it right? If you think about it some car ownership is less stressful, more rewarding or just more fun than others. Almost everyone has a story about that Toyota or BMW they drove which was nearly trouble free. We also hear the stories about the cars which always seemed to be in the shop. What makes the difference? The late Stephen Covey taught on basic habits for a successful life. Some of the same habits apply to your Mercedes, BMW or Toyota as well. Mr Covey broke life down into four basic parts or quadrants. There is the important urgent, the important not urgent, the not important urgent and the not important not urgent. What is this guy talking about? Here is a graph which may help. You want to stay out of box number one. It is expensive. They best way to minimize your time in the first box, “Expensive Repairs,” is to spend time in the second ... read more

BMW Bellingham

BMW Bellingham

Dateline BMW Bellingham. Did you know that even changing the battery in your BMW requires the vehicle to be reprogrammed? To get the most out of a battery replacement the new battery must be “registered.” If this is not done battery life will be diminished as the charging system will charge the battery as if it was an old battery. Your Modern BMW is that smart. Over time as your cars battery gets weaker the alternator is told by the battery control unit to charge the older weaker battery differently that it did when the battery was new. So if you can’t even change the battery without the special computer how much more do you need the correct tool to properly diagnose and repair the engine management system.
